Epilog: I'm a Home Owner and Closing Thoughts
by Julian on Apr.30, 2009,under House Purchase
Well it is time to close this blog. I have purchased my first house. My thoughts on the whole process.
...
First off, both Ken and the Mortgage Broker were awesome. I would recommend (and have) both to anybody looking to purchase a home.
If I were fly back in time, what would I do differently?
I may have pushed the seller to fix a few more things, missing light switch covers, take their cleaning chemicals with them. More little things than major issues.
I was disappointed to find that the hot water heater was turned off, and a window that would not fully close. I think one more round with the lawn mower would have been in order, prior to my taking the property.
But then one gets to the point of being nit picky and I really don't have patience for it.
I think I did a good job of educating myself on the process. Ken was always willing to fill in the blanks were they needed to be filled in. But I think experience is the best teacher.
I was approved for about $15K more than I settled on. My original budget was $130K figering $2400 in yearly taxes. The house came in at $135K but the taxes are about $1700 which allowed me to go a little extra on the mortgage.
All together I think I looked at about 20 - 25 houses. I looked at about 200 plus on the Internet. I found three houses that I had good "WOW" and decided on the one that I could live in for the rest of my life. No I don't plan to do this again. It took me 50 years to get the first one.
Signing off.
